We all know that sheets, pillowcases and bedding should be washed regularly, but how often do you wash your pillows? Over time, they accumulate sweat, oil, food, hair (human and pet), dust, debris, etc. It is recommended that pillows get washed at least twice a year and up to four times a year depending on your personal use.
Most pillows come with a care tag, so make sure you check that before throwing it in the washer and calling it a day. Down or feather and polyester are good to put in the washing machine but read the instructions on what temperature and spin setting they should be at. Memory foam or latex pillows should avoid the washing machine, as the agitation can break up the foam and ruin the pillow. You can vacuum it for dust, spot clean with a damp cloth and a small bit of detergent and lay flat to dry.
No matter the material, make sure the pillow is completely dry to avoid mildew. If you are using your dryer, set it at moderate heat for an hour. If you have a sensor detecting machine, avoid using that setting since it senses the outer material. Pro tip: Add a couple of dry towels and two fresh tennis balls or dryer balls to keep the pillows from clumping.
You can also hang most pillows on a clothesline and can do that weekly to freshen your pillows up. Buying a good pillow cover can help your pillow last longer and reduce the amount of times you need to clean it. Just think about the good night sleep you’ll have once your pillows and bedding are clean!
