Springtime is typically the time we associate with cleaning our windows, but you can do it any time. Here are some things to avoid when cleaning your windows, and how to do it properly so you can enjoy the streak-free sun all year long.
First things first, don’t choose a sunny, hot day to clean the windows. When the sun is beating down, the cleaner you use will dry out before you get a chance to wipe it off, making it harder to wipe off. When starting on the outside of the house, you want to prep the windows by brushing off the dirt and residue with a brush. If your screen also looks grimy, pop it out and wash those with hot soapy water and a soft brush, then set them out to dry.
You only need to clean the outside windows once or twice a year, depending on the climate around your home. Focus on one room at a time and you’ll have sparkling windows in no time.
Once you have the window itself prepped and ready, start with the with removing the dust from the window frame, tracks, and sill with a vacuum, duster or microfiber cloth. Do the same with the blinds, and if you have curtains this is a great time to take those down and wash them according to their instructions.
Another common mistake people make is not using enough cleaner. Whatever your choice is, we love Sprayway Glass Cleaner, use a generous amount. Use a lint-free paper towel or a microfiber cloth and wipe the windows from top to bottom. Wipe in an up-and-down motion or side-to-side until the streaks are gone and the glass is clear. Circular wiping motions can leave streaks on the windows, While the screens dry, do the same on the outside of the window and frames (don’t forget to get the dirt and dust off of the sills first). The outer windows are more likely to be dirtier, we recommend you use a bucket of Dawn dish soap and water to get a good, clean shine. You will want to wash, rinse, and then dry.
Once the screens are dry, pop them back in, head inside and put those clean curtains up (my mother would insist you iron them first, but that’s your choice) and bask in the light! Your house plants will thank you and so will your furry friends who love to lay in the sun.
