Did you know that vacuums need maintenance just like every other machine in your house? When was the last time your vacuum was serviced? If you said, “never,” you are not alone.
Brush rolls
A vacuum’s brush roll needs inspected and cleaned frequently. When your roller has hair tangled around it, it causes the vacuum to work harder than it needs too. The suction could be compromised, and it won’t clean as well as it should. Use scissors or a small blade to carefully cut the hair from the brush roll.
Old brush rolls, or ones that have gotten wet, may need replaced. If the roll does not spin freely, it can damage the machine.
Belts
Vacuum belts need to be inspected at least quarterly and should be replaced if they are bent, cracked, or broken. A damaged vacuum belt can damage a roller and effects the suction on your vacuum.
Luckily vacuum belts are inexpensive. For regular household use, we recommend changing your belt at least once a year even if it isn’t damaged.
Clogs
Nothing makes a vacuum more useless than a clog. Sometimes they are easy to find, but other times you may have to search harder or remove parts. Anytime you suck up something long and pokey (hair pins, wood splinters, toothpicks, etc) you risk the item getting lodged in your vacuum causing a clog.
Clogs in the hose are easiest to find. Sometimes the clog is at the base of the vacuum in a smaller hose piece. You may need to remove some parts to find this clog. At Eckler Cleaning, we have special tools designed to unclog a vacuum hose.
