Fabric stripping is a process used to remove grime, excess dyes, dirt, sweat, or other substances from fabric in order to restore it to its original glory. The process involves soaking the fabric in a stripping solution that breaks down the substances on the fabric. Here’s the recipe:
1 Part Borax, 1 Part Washing Soda, 2 Parts Powered Tide
The amount of each you use depends on the amount of water you are using. If you have a small bucket for a few items, you may want to use a tablespoon. If you are stripping a lot of items in your bathtub, use a full measuring cup. Washing soda and baking soda are NOT the same thing.
Why strip fabirc?
Work out clothing, towels, sheets, and other frequently used items will hold onto stink and grime. Have you ever noticed your kids football clothing smells no matter what you do? This is caused by improper washing and build up over time. There’s also something mysterious and magical in teenagers’ sweat that just wants to stick to their clothing forever.
How to strip fabric
Add all the items to a tub or container and fill with hot hot hot water. Mix in the above ratio in the water and stir. Every hour or two, stir the items to agitate and mix. When we strip mop heads at Eckler Cleaning Services, we mix everything in a bathtub and use a mop handle to stir.
After soaking for several hours (or overnight), rinse the fabric thoroughly to remove the stripping solution and any residue. Put everything in the washing machine and wash like usual. Now your items should smell, feel, and look better!
