Get Rid of the Junk Drawer

We all have that one drawer in our kitchen. You know the one. The junk drawer. Is yours filled with sauce packets, receipts, random gift cards, rubber bands, we can keep going on. We’re going to break down how to declutter that junk drawer and make it more efficient for you and your family.

Have you ever gotten to the point where you couldn’t even open the junk drawer? It was too full with items you may or may not need to even get inside of it. It’s ok, we’ve all been there. But if you’re at that point or teetering closer and closer to it, then we have some tips for you to declutter, organize and create a space that is actually useful.

First things first, take everything out of the drawer. Empty it out completely. I like to organize items as I am emptying into different sections like: 1.) why is this in here/ do I even know what this is, 2.) throw away, 3.) keep, 4.) put in (insert room name here). That way when it comes time to reassemble, I have an idea of what needs to go back into the drawer or what needs to be moved.

Once you have sorted into piles (or dumped on the floor, we don’t judge), throw away what needs to be tossed, put items deemed in the incorrect spot back where they belong and wipe out your drawer. Who knows what has been sitting in there this entire time.

We recommend using drawer dividers to organize the items and keep it from getting cluttered again. Amazon has some great options here or here. Then start placing items back in the drawer by group. Think of the things that you use the most often in the drawer. Pens, pencils, writing utensils can all go together along with notepads or post-it notes. Keeping a flashlight with working batteries, lighters and certain tools like screwdrivers in the drawer is also helpful so you know exactly where those things are in case of an emergency.

Now next time you need a pen, you know exactly where to go because your junk drawer is completely organized. No more rushing in a panic! We love an organized drawer and decluttering in general and hope you feel the same way after completing this task.
