We’re going to dive right into deep cleaning your kitchen (just in time for the holidays). We’re talking appliances, cabinets and more. The goal is to clean it so well that your nosy mother-in-law doesn’t have anything to complain about when she gets to your house for the holidays. Please feel free to insert whatever relative visits your home then complains about your home during the holidays.

First, take an evaluation of everything in your kitchen and jot down some notes. We’ll create a bullet list of items in your kitchen and how to clean them properly so you can have a handy cheat sheet.

• Refrigerator
  • Cleaning out the fridge is easy, but tedious. It is recommended that you do this before a heavy grocery shopping trip, so you aren’t leaving food out of the fridge for too long. We like to remove all items in the fridge, including in the doors and take a rag and bucket of room temperature water with dish soap and wipe everything down. Stubborn messes can be sprayed with some vinegar and wiped down as well. Then go back through with clean water and make sure all the suds are gone. Put everything back inside and you’re done! 
• Freezer
  • We did a breakdown of how to clean your freezer here. Like the refrigerator, we recommend cleaning it before it’s filled to the brim with your favorite holiday pies.
• Oven
  • Depending on the kind of oven that you have, different cleaning methods are recommended. Most ovens have a self-cleaning system that you can run (when you are home) and wipe out anything that was left behind the clean system. For more stubborn messes, we recommend Easy Off (restrictions apply) and a pumice stone.
• Stovetop
  • Various stovetops mean various ways to clean them. Have a glass cooktop with stubborn stains? Try spraying down the top with water and dawn and adding a dusting of Bar Keeper’s Friend. with a soapy wash cloth, you can remove the stains but rubbing in a circular motion. Don’t let the Bar Keeper’s Friend sit long, or it can etch your surface. Using soap and water and scrubbing your stovetop down will work wonders. Don’t forget to lift the stovetop if you have an electric coil stove top.
• Microwave
  • If you’re like us and have kids, your microwave is always dirty. If you want to save using all the muscle, put equal parts vinegar and water in a microwave safe cup or bowl and put it in the microwave to run for 2-3 minutes. Then go in and wipe everything down with a rag.
• Cabinets
  • Oh cabinets, when is the last time you cleaned yours? Depending on what material the cabinets are, there are different methods but the most common one seems to be vinegar. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and put in a spray bottle. Spray the inside of the cabinets with the mixture, let sit for a minute or two and wipe down with a rag until completely dry. You’ll be amazed at the gunk that comes off. Don’t forget to spray and wipe down the fronts of the cabinets so it is clean inside and out. If the cabinets re made of wood, you’ll want to wet a rag with soapy water and ring out.
• Sink
  • How is your sink smelling? It is always good to wipe down your sink with warm water and Dawn after an evening of cooking. This helps keep things sanitary and safe. Running hot water and vinegar down the drain also helps keep things in the drain and garbage disposal clean.
• Top of appliances
  • While you are cleaning the inside and outside of your appliances, make sure you are getting the tops, too. You can’t imagine how dusty and greasy the top of your microwave, fridge and cabinets get with the cooking you do throughout the year. Take a dust rag to get the dust and dirt off, then go through with your vinegar and rag to get the rest of the grime.
• Lighting fixtures
  • Have fancy light fixtures in your kitchen? Have you taken a look lately to see if they are dusty? I bet they are. Depending on what kind of fixture you have, using a rag and dish soap is a gentle way to clean those items. You might need a step ladder to really get them clean. • Under cabinets
  • We’ve already discussed how easily baseboards get dirty here. Your kitchen is no exception! Wipe down with soapy water and a rag and marvel in the amount of dirt that comes off.
