Washing with cold water and mild soap is a safe bet for most rugs. If you’re able to let them air dry outside, that will extend the life of the rug.
Front door mats and rugs leading in and out of the outside need to be cleaned more frequently. If it is a material you can’t wash in a washing machine, you can set aside a day to clean large area rugs outside.
Make sure the weather is sunny and warm enough to work outside to leave the rugs to dry. You can research the different kinds of carpet cleaners that work for your carpets and pick the best one.
