Do you remember the commercials of the baby ducklings covered in oil getting cleaned by Dawn? The main product messaging was that Dawn was tough enough to clean grease off of the ducklings, but safe enough that the animals wouldn’t be harmed during the cleaning. Thanks to this advertisement, now most of us know that Dawn has several uses outside of cleaning dishes.
If you have a stain, smudge, or hard to clean item, your best bet is to try Dawn first. If you notice a grease stain on your favorite shirt, pre-treat it with some Dawn. You can add a drop or two to the spot and scrub with the Dawn into the stain with an old toothbrush. Wash as you normally would and be marveled at the clean shirt!
You can also put a little bit of Dawn on a lens cleaner and wipe your glasses down for an automatic defogger for your glasses. If you need a quick ice pack, fill a strong zip lock sandwich bag with Dawn, close and freeze. The liquid soap retains the cold for longer and can be refrozen over and over. With the warmer weather, you can also make bubble solution! Just combine 2 cups of warm water, ⅓ cup Dawn, and ¼ cup light corn syrup or glycerin. You can store it in a Tupperware to be used all summer long.
Have fruit flies and gnats become a problem? Just mix four parts red wine or apple cider vinegar to 1 part Dawn and place in a glass. Cover the top with plastic wrap and poke a few holes in the top. The flies will be attracted to the solution and won’t be able to fly back out of the bowl.
If you are looking to do a deep-clean of your kitchen, Dawn is safe enough to use on your cabinets. Just have a small bucket with warm water and Dawn and use a damp rag inside and out of your cabinets. Follow up with a clean, wet sponge to remove any residue and dry with a clean cloth.
How are your grill grates looking? You can mix ½ cup baking soda with enough Dawn to make a thick paste. Make sure you scrape off the big debris of the grates and then coat with the mixture. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, scrub, and rinse.
