Pest control

The weather is warmer and that means the local pests are out patrolling your house for areas of entry. Whether you’re seeing an increase of ants, fruit flies, or other crawly critters, we have some safe natural pest control remedies for you.

If you’re a coffee drinker, save the grounds and place them in spots around the house where pests are coming in. Many insects can’t stand the smell and will steer clear. This can also be used in your garden!

If your plants have been over-watered or you left those bananas out too long, here’s a way to reduce fruit flies in your house. Grab a small bowl and pour in a little apple cider vinegar and a squirt of Dawn dish soap. The fruit flies will be attracted to the vinegar smell and won’t be able to get out of the slippery Dawn jail.

Have the ants come marching one-by-one into your kitchen. Spread small piles of cornmeal down wherever the ants are. They like to eat the cornmeal and will return it to their colony but cannot digest it. It may take a couple of days, but this is a pet-safe way to remove ants from the house. You can also follow the ant trail with a solution of ¼ cup white vinegar and 2 cups water.

Are flies crashing your backyard barbecue? Plant a few pots of sweet basil next to your door and it will keep the flies at bay. We can’t guarantee your pets will be happy you are taking away their prey, but it saves you from a pesky fly.

If you don’t like spiders in the house, you can place a bowl of water with some sliced up onions to keep spiders at bay. If you have ladybugs making their homes inside your place, you can place a bag of cloves or use clove oil. The ladybugs don’t like strong smells and will vacate your premises shortly.

We aren’t saying that bugs don’t have their uses in the ecosystem, but they can stay outside. Follow these tricks to keep them out there and keep the inside insect-free.
