As the owner of a new puppy, I am up to my elbows in pet messes. When Zeus is good, he is a very good boy. But when he is bad, he is A VERY BAD BOY! Lately, he has decided if he poops in his cage and rolls around in it, he won’t have to be caged. We disagree.
If you are a pet owner like me, then you’ve dealt with pet messes. Whether your fur baby urinates, poops, or vomits, we are here to teach you the correct way to clean these messes. No one plans for their pet to get sick, and timely and proper cleanup will help safely remove the mess and its stink.
Act Quickly
It’s important to clean up pet messes as soon as possible to prevent it from soaking into the surface, spreading, or causing hard to remove odors. Before starting the cleaning process, it’s important to protect yourself by wearing disposable gloves.
Remove Chunks
Whether your cat coughed up a gnarly hair ball, or left a poop gift on the area rug, your first step is to remove any large pieces. You do not want to risk smearing around the mess and making the problem worse.
When Zeus makes a mess, I use a plastic grocery bag to get the large chunks, tie in a knot, and immediately take it outside to the trash can.
Absorb and Dilute Urine
Use paper towels or a clean cloth to blot up as much urine as possible. Apply pressure to absorb the liquid. When Zeus has an accident in the house, I will fold an old towel into a few layers, and stand on it (shoes on!) to absorb as much urine as possible.
Mix a solution of 4-parts water to 1-part OdoBan Odor Eliminator and Disinfectant Concentrate. Pour this mixture over the affected area to help neutralize the odor and break down the urine. With a new clean rag or towel, soak up as much of the liquid as possible.
Use Odoban to Neutralize the Odor
OdoBan is a pet-specific enzymatic cleaner and disinfectant designed to break down the stinky molecules in pet messes. Follow the instructions on the cleaner and apply it to the affected area. For tough messes, we recommend mixing 4-parts water to 1-part OdoBan. For everyday use, we will mix 16-parts water to 1-parts Odoban.
Spray the affected area and let it sit for 10 minutes. This allows the enzymes to work and eliminate any remaining odor. Skipping this step and cause the odors to return.
Rinse and Dry
After the recommended time, rinse the area thoroughly with clean water to remove any residue. Blot the area again to remove excess moisture and allow it to air dry. Remember, it’s important to test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t damage or discolor the surface. OdoBan is pH neutral so, if used correctly, it should be safe for most surface types.
