How to clean inside your kitchen cabinets

It is time. The cabinets in your kitchen hold a special place for secret lost grime in your home. Dust, grime, and crumbs. Goop, sugar spills, and more. At least once a year, you should take the time to properly clean out your cabinets.

Don’t know where to start? Overwhelmed by the task? Start with this list or reach out to Eckler Cleaning today so we can help.

Empty the cabinets

Remove all items from the cabinets to access the interior surfaces. While you are remove items, you can sort through things you no longer use and donate the items.

Vacuum the Crumbs

Whether it’s spilt sugar and coffee grounds, or unknown crumb, it could benefit you to vacuum the inside prior to washing. We like to use the soft brush attachment on our vacuum hose to clean the interior of cabinets prior to washing. This makes the next step easier.

Mix your cleaning solution

In a bucket or a clean kitchen sink, mix warm wash with a small amount of Dawn or other dish soap. You do not need a lot of soap – too much could leave a residue on your cabinets. We recommend one teaspoon per gallon of water.

Wash surfaces

Use a soft cloth to clean the surfaces. At Eckler Cleaning services, one of our favorite rag types is made from old cotton t-shirts. They are soft and safe for most surfaces. Plus, we love sustainability! Clean the inside of the cabinets and the doors.

Spills, stains, and sticky residue

Was the honey leaking and left a mess? Pay attention to spills and stains. For stubborn stains or spills, you may need to use a wet plastic razor blade, or a tougher cleaner. For greasy cabinets (or smoke residue) we will add 1/8 cup of borax to a gallon of water with dawn. The alkalinity of the borax makes cleaning greasy residue a breaze!

Test of the borax solution in a small area before cleaning the entire cabinet. If you have natural wood, it could strip the finish off.

Dry the cabinets

Use a clean, dry cloth to wipe down the interior and exterior surfaces of the cabinets and ensure they are completely dry before placing items back inside. Remember: dark plus wet equal mold. Makes sure they inside is completely dry so you don’t get bacteria growth.

Organize and declutter

Before returning items to the cabinets, take the opportunity to declutter and organize your kitchen items for a more efficient and tidy storage space. Put similar items together: this includes storage containers with their lids.

By following these steps, you can effectively clean the inside of your kitchen cabinets and maintain a clean and organized kitchen space.
