Use this, Not That: Pregnancy Safe Cleaners

Pregnant women should be cautious about using certain cleaners due to potential risks to both their health and the developing fetus.

Not all cleaners are good for all surface types, and using the wrong cleaner can damage your furniture, windows, or appliances. Make sure to follow the cleaning bottle instructions and/or dilute cleaning products properly.

types of cleaners to avoid:

Harsh Chemicals: Stay away from products that contain bleach, ammonia, or other strong solvents.

Aerosol Sprays: These can release harmful chemicals into the air, which can be inhaled. This includes oven and glass cleaners like Easy Off and Sprayway.

Fume-Producing Cleaners: Products that emit strong fumes, like some window cleaners, should be avoided.

Pesticides: Avoid insecticides and herbicides, as they can pose risks.

Scented Products: Artificial fragrances can trigger allergies or sensitivities.

Pregnant individuals can opt for safer cleaning alternatives that are effective and less likely to pose health risks. When in doubt, talk to your doctor or OB/GYN about safe cleaning practices while pregnant.

Pregnancy Friendly Cleaners:

Eco-Friendly Commercial Cleaners: Look for brands specifically labeled as non-toxic, fragrance-free, and safe for use around pregnant individuals. We like products such as Seventh Generation and Babyganics.

Vinegar: A natural disinfectant that can clean glass, some counter tops, showers, and more. Make sure to dilute properly.

Baking Soda: Great for scrubbing surfaces and deodorizing.

Castile Soap: A plant-based soap that can be used for various cleaning tasks. Do not mix with vinegar or lemon juice. Make sure you dilute this properly. Dr Bronner’s is our favorite castile soap, and they have an unscented version as well.

Always remember to ensure good ventilation while cleaning, and consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice! You can also find more information on specific cleaning products via their SDS sheet for each type of cleaning product.
